YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark (**CLOSED**)

For those of you who don't know. The YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark was closed on September 4, 1999 due to the State of Hawaii's freeway retrofitting project. The retrofitting project was only supposed to last 3 months. But now, well over a year and a half later, it seems the State is still 'retrofitting' the freeway, and the YMCA seems to have lost momentum on the possibility of relocating the skatepark. Please call the Central YMCA at any of these numbers to express your desire for a new skatepark: (808)951-3344, (808)951-1310, (808)951-1322.

What WAS the deal with Kapahulu?

For those of you who don't already know, this is probably all the information you need to understand what the YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark is all about.

Let's begin where it all began, with the land. The land is a tricky situation. It belongs to all three levels of government. The best way for me to explain it is like this: The surface we skate on is leased to us from the Department of Parks and Recreation (City & County of Honolulu) which is leased to them from the the Department of Transportation (State of Hawaii) and the Federal Highways Administration (United States Government) is generous enough to provide us with the shade. It wasn't easy to get the land, and it won't be easy keeping it.

Next let's look at what's on the land from Monday through Friday. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) operates it's RECON station and it's motorcycle testing there from 7-4:30pm. They have been very supportive of the skatepark since day one.

On Saturdays, Sundays and Selected Holidays a portion of the land is turned over the YMCA and HSA to do what they want. So what is on the land?

Well let's first of all we have our 6ft high 20ft wide mini ramp (which was built in October 1997).

Then on to the semi-permanent ramps, an 11ft high 32ft wide vert wall with 10ft transitions and 1ft of vert, an 8ft high16ft wide bank ramp, and a 6 1/2ft high 16ft wide quarter-pipe.

They are semi-permanent because they do not move...easily. All the other obstacles, which include:

Andy Box adopted by Chad: two 18" boxes that can be formed to make a 24ft long box, a U shaped box with a curve and a kink or a lip shaped box or two separate boxes or a wall with steel coping or a Y shaped box or two boxes with a gap or.....

Manual Box: a 12ft long, 1ft high box that is used for beginners to work their way to the 18" box.

T&C Rail: a handrail w/banks that can or can't have a platform in between it. The platform can be 8ft or 4ft or none or maybe a gap from bank to handrail.

Curb Cuts: twin curb cuts w/deck to place near handrail w/angle iron or place by itself near the freeway divider or near manual box or under manual box or next to Andy Box adopted by Chad for ledge things.

Freeway Divider (under the Freeway): an 8ft wide 2ft high box with kinked tranny for wallies and punk grinds. Good for placing near or on other obstacles.
