The 3rd annual 2002 Ewa Beach Skate Jam, in my opinion, one of the best contests all year, went down on Saturday, July 27th. It was a turn out as expected. It started early in the morning, and finished in the evening. A lot of people showed up, family, friends, skateboarders from around the island, and people just coming down to watch. The contest had live entertainment; a Samoan church came out and rocked the house for a bit, Olivia killed it as usual, along with Apartment 3. Skaters who entered the contest got free drinks and food! And if you didn't enter the contest, you still got hooked up with juice, water, cookies, and FREE JAMBA JUICE!!!!!!!!!!! That's right. There were even rides for the kiddies behind the skatepark.
The kids were killing it from morning till the end. Some of crazier skateboarding went down in the older divisions (14-17, 18+, sponsored). We had guys like the TERMINATOR (Brandon Silva) dominating the course with huge fs melons over the hip.
Halfway through the contest there was something that was supposed to be a sponsored demonstration. Well that didn't go too well, instead, what started off with $5 to who ever threw down the sickest trick, turned into who ever can do the best trick will get $120 and a 40 dollar helmet. We had guys like Bronson Gregory doing fs 360 and kickflip indys over the hip, kickflip blunt fuckie and other sick tricks. Also young rippers like Nick Yamasato melon grabbing over the whoooooooole box, Chase York (2 time defending champ), doing every flip trick imaginable off the fun box, it was just getting crazy. After all the madness, we needed a winner, so we turned to the audience and we got a unanimous decision that NICK YAMASATO deserves some extra cash. Rumor had it that he took the west side crew for some world class Jarrett bush steaks.
That pretty much sums it all up. All in all, the contest went down as a success. Vivian (who put the event on) says it's the best feeling to see kids go home with big smiles on their faces. I hope to see you all next year at the Ewa Beach Skate Jam.
