Secret Spot
The Sierras December 11, 1997
OK, so maybe this secret spot of the month column is not so monthly anymore. And these days the only effort we make to ride new terrain is to place the street obstacles in different locations at the kapahulu skatepark. However, earlier this summer, we still had the drive to seek out and skate new spots in Hawaii, no matter how insignificant or small. One of the greatest thrills in skateboarding is sessioning something that hardly, if ever, gets sessioned at all. In fact, a lot of these places we see everyday, but don't take the time to actually go skate them unless they are within the vicinity of various other skate spots. So, this secret spot of the month page is dedicated to all those remote dumb shit little places. You probably live right across the street from one.

The Sierras is a small public park located on the top of a mountain. When its not raining there, it makes a fun little spot for sessioning with the boys, but not sessioning with little boys, if you know what I mean (there's other spots on the web for that). At the Sierras, there are a couple of grindable curbs, a manly sized rail, and a tiny ditch-sized lump with metal pipe strategically placed on the top. Obviously the Sierras is skated by the local skate populace, who have made the effort to keep all lips grindable and well lathered with wax. While we were there, no other skaters showed, but some wildman wearing gardening gloves skated by the park on a longboard and tried to bomb the hill Future Primitive style. He looked like the Filipino Stacy Peralta.
