Team Challenge
September, 1998
 |
It was the first of its kind to hit the Hickam Hangar, PASS's Vert Team Challenge. Boarders were measured up by the height of their airs, the length of their grinds, and doubles routines. I'm talking forget about lines - just climb up the ramp and do your routine. Skateboarding meets gymnastics? It seems to go against everything that makes skateboarding so great. I mean who says you need to do a big air (or any trick for that matter) to do well in a contest? I must remind you of Bill Danforth who in the early 90's would make the top ten in many contests without doing a single air.
But for argument's sake I could see what Mike Kays was getting at, a combined effort among all riders on a team pushing their personal best on the so called 'basics'. Once the measuring tape was put away I then realized how fun the contest format really was.

Highlights: by Mike Kays
Overall the Team Challenge went off without a hitch... I believe this type of competition really helps push the limits and works coordination within the teams. My fav. was the doubles, seeing those guys work the routine or first combo airials over one another was fantastic and exhilarating!! Not to say the least Robby Gaskell's near 6 foot backside air and Kale Sandridges frontside 5 foot plus slob air started the competition off with a bang. Oh... yea... cant forget 'grom' Chris Kays 17 foot 50/50 grind either... all in all, PASS really appreciates the support from all the local shops on the series as well as the team challengers. This contest was a Winner Take All competition... hats off to the Volcom crew... trophy and $200.00 for their efforts. Thanks again...
