ASH Contest #2 & 2.5
June 21 & 28, 1997
 |
|
For the second installment of this summer's ASH contest series (the first contest was at the Kailua Recreation center), a U-Haul full of tiny street obstacles were set up at the skateboarding mecca known as the Aala Park skating rink/ homeless shelter/ ice house, home of various prior contests. Who could forget last year's world class Soul Rider's contest, or how about T&C's Return to Sunburn Classic? |
The original ASH contest was slated for Saturday, June 21st, but this date can be better defined as an experiment in weather; the overall attitude being, "If somebody even spits on the ramp, we'll cover them up with a tarp until they dry." The ASH organizers learned a new rule that day, don't fuck with mother nature. After some dark clouds rolled in, the contest was unfortunately cancelled, and pushed back to the following week on Saturday, June 28th. The skaters showed their respects to the unpopular $5 entry fee by taking it out on all the uncovered ramps. One of those ramps, this boardslide rail/sidewalk thingy was pulverized as the bar became separated from the sidewalk, and ended up as really lame slappy curb. Sadly enough, this ramp was not brought back the next Saturday, although it was replaced by an even better ramp, a one foot high monster launch ramp, donated by the infamous Kale Sandridge. |
|
Saturday the 28th was a date plagued by the exact same weather, so rather than risk the humiliation of an impending riot with another cancellation, the contest was held rain or shine. And rain or shine it did. It would rain for a while, then shine, then rain once again.

Just for your enjoyment, we've documented one such case of two chicks battling with a banner they eventually conquer using a bit of both techniques. If my memory serves me correct one of their names is Lisa, so say "cheese" Lisa! |
One of the most popular activities at this contest was the fine art of banner-lifting. Now, I'm not sure why anybody would want to steal these stupid things, unless there was a naked chick on them balancing beers on her tits or something, but people were going to town on them during both contests. Some used knives, some used scissors, some even just tore them down, but everybody thought they had their own special sly technique on taking them down. The technique varied, there was the brash, "I don't care who's watching, I'm going to rip the shit down and walk away" technique, and then there was the "Let's stand by the banner for 2 hours and slowly unfasten the all tie-downs until the banner blows away with the wind and then pick it up" technique.

Mike and the infamous Lap Master

Oh yeah, speaking of you girls out there, look for our upcoming feature story about "skate-sluts", we're still gathering material for that one, so if anybody want to send naked pictures of themselves to the bellboy, he wouldn't mind so much at all (we're starting to wonder if bellboy's gay). We're working on getting a few interviews with the reformed and not so reformed, and a few really unfortunate others.
Anyway, back to the contest. I don't know remember much about anybody's runs, so either that's good or really really bad. You can look at the pictures for that. I do remember this disturbing trend of about 10 fuckers losing their shoes during their runs. Tie your fucking shoes. Some, such as John Tavares, hempmaster and winner of ASH's Kailua contest, chose not to ride the ramps at all, and treated Aala Park like a big miniramp with about 200 feet of flatbottom.
